Don’t use Chat GPT here. Has anyone else noticed that AI has totally messed up customer service? If Yahoo is using it for spam filtering it ain’t working either.

In my opinion, the source of the hallucination problem is much deeper. The problem is that computers don’t KNOW anything. All digital computers can do is store and manipulate bits. At the fundamental level, when a computer runs a program, the computer can change a 1 to a 0, change a 0 to a 1, or leave a bit’s value unchanged.

Suppose you build a program to store information about people: name, address, telephone number, email address, date of birth, date of death, and sex. A user fills in the data for Cleopatra (without phone number or email) but omits her date of death. If queried today, the computer would report that Cleopatra is 2096 years old.

I started playing with ChatGPT as soon as it became available. That name is revealing: It was designed to pass the Turing test. It is NOT named EncyclopediaGPC. I asked it to write an argument supporting a simple proposition of law with supporting case citations. It wrote a sound argument, but 2 of the 4 cases it cited did not exist (“hallucination” had not yet been used to describe this). I asked ChatGPT to explain this. It apologized and said that it made up ALL the citations. It does not know true from false.
